Crisis

I want out of PhD land. I suddenly realized that I don't particularly like academia. I like to teach. I like to read and write poems. I like to read interesting things about poetry written by smart people. I don't like to produce boring academic treatises.

Advice?

Uh oh. The same thing happened to my friend better known as Sour Persimmons. She was this close to finishing her PhD, after a year in Germany on a Fullbright and a gig at the Met (she was in Art History), giving talks at the National Gallery and tours and the Cloisters, and then WHAM! realized she hated all the crappola (and many of the people) that went along with her choice of career.

Then again, it might just pass!

Oh boy, trying to figure out what you what to be when you grow up sucks. If you think you want to teach, try to get that Ph.D. How many years do you have left?

You could become a lawyer. That's what I did. But it has its own pains.

Erica,

I'd be happy to discuss--how can I contact you? Your blogger profile info is blocked...
