Saturday Mailbox

Yesterday, I braved the 100-degree heat to bicycle home and pick up my mail. I've been staying across town in Casa Schiff-Twemlow, equipped with air conditioner and angry cat. After the heat broke in early evening I biked to my mailbox and discovered two pieces of poetry-related mail that more than made up for the slightly sweaty bike ride.

Exhibit A: I'm no Matt Shindell, but....
A nifty postcard from Brenda. It features a golden guy (I'm guessing it's supposed to be Poseidon) prying open the jaws of a nasty-looking sea creature. The sea creature is also golden. A stream of water is shooting out its mouth. It is a functional sculpture. It is a fountain.

Exhibit B: A rejection from Gulf Coast. It's a form rejection but with a handwritten note:

"'Syllabus Rulebook' elicited a good deal of discussion, and I love the energy and voice in much of your work. We'd like to see more work from you in the future. Best, Melanie Jordan."

Go Energy! Go Voice! Go Melanie!

Weird. I went to undergrad with Melanie in Chattanooga, and didn't know she was at Gulf Coast.

Congrats on the good rejection!

I'm not really posting anonymously -- I was pointed to your blog, and was really kind of excited to see that i made your day rather than ruining it with my note. I remember "Syllabus Rulebook," and there was a lively, thoughtful discussion about it among the editorial staff, which is always a positive. So I hope it's not weird that I'm posting here, but thanks for making *my* day.

And hi, Laurel Snyder. Long time, no see. I just got to Gulf Coast recently, so that's probably why you didn't know.
