In the Mail

* Fulcrum Number Three: This looks fucking awesome. I love Fulcrum. Lots of good stuff here. I haven’t read it yet, but have paged through it in the wee morning hours of this morning. More later.

* Spoon River Poetry Review XXIX(2): Contributor’s copies. I think that somewhere, someone noted that I am the only poet here with three poems. And the third poem is really just four prose paragraphs that may or may not be poetic. Julie Dill pointed out that in this particular poem it seems as if I’m confusing Don Juan with Geo. Gordon the poet. Of course I’m not doing this. Or maybe I’m not.

* The Aubergine Anthology: Courtesy of Mssrs. Corey and Tieger, my favorite Ithacans. Really funny, strong poems here. My aubergine poem is dirty. It involves Iron Chef and a fantasy about having sex with David Bowie.

* Honorarium check from ZYZZYVA. I thought they had forgotten me! Twenty-four dollars was deducted and put toward my subscription. I have a ZYZZYVA tee-shirt that I love to wear but, in my current BMI=32 state, is a bit snug.

* Rejection from River Styx: Now, I know Kent Johnson will probably put a comment down below saying something like “River Styx! What were you thinking?” but I thought about it and submitted anyway. The note reads: “Anthony Robinson [form letter stuff] Sorry for taking so long. We liked “First Date/Last Date” and “Small Confession,” but they didn’t quite get the votes. Thanks and good luck. [scribble that, I guess, stands in for Richard Newman].” Ah! Votes! The poems need votes! My campaigning is weak. I'm underfunded.

* A lot of bills.

* An advertisement for Martha Stewart’s new magazine that is no crafts and all recipes. Xmas wish list anyone?

* Feb 2005 issue of Bon Appetit.

Robinson, I did not suggest or insinuate or in any other way imply that you were transposing the two Don Juan characters. I pointed out that your opinion is screwy, since Don Juan sucks, and the narrator, who is, in effect, George Gordon, is way cooler. Don Juan is a wimp and his love affairs are only weak instances of passivity. He has little to no loyalty for the women with whom he cavorts, and he has a disturbing habit of leaving them miserable and imprisoned, or dead. Don Juan was way more butch than Byron.

Boys who will kiss boys are hot.

Dear Ms. Dill,

I must admit that I posted this partly to get you to clarify what you meant. Then I reread my poem. Note that most of the praise is given to Byron, not Juan. I said I love the way Juan flits about. I *like* the frivolity, the ineffectuality, perhaps because I am ineffectual. I'm not sure I understand where the butchness factor fits in.

I watched a biography on Byron on A&E the other night. He definitely kissed boys.

Pet bear and a clubfoot.

That's what I couldn't wrap my brain around. I know that's the part you liked about it, but you heaped it all on Juan, who isn't really admirable at all, and I don't even think Byron liked him. He was naive and silly, only like Byron in that he was stunted from growing up normally by an overbearing freak-ass nightmare of a mother.

I don't have the issue with me here, I'll look at it again and continue clarifying my opinion. Not that I didn't thoroughly enjoy telling you your opinion was wrong. That's from Stefene Russell story.
