Kansas. I miss Kansas. Kansas is the old sincerity: elevators and silos and water towers and stars.

Kansas is Boeing and Raytheon; Fort Riley with 3,600 deployed troops in Iraq; home of the Chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence- author of the report exonerating the Prez in the WMD debacle; Fred Phelps. War. Pizza Hut. Intelligent Design.

Tony, thanks for pimping my ride.

Ah, but it is also SP Dinsmoor's crucifixion of labor and
Wes Jackson's land institute and prairie populism, Quindaro and Nicodemus and Keats. John Brown, Walt Whitman, Carrie Nation, one of the first places for full property rights for women, a great grandmother who broke the sod and staked a claim as a single woman. I'm not so timid as to let the idiot bastards think they own that state completely. It's by every right also _mine_.

Or, are we talking about the same state? Can't see the Konza for the Koch industries, eh? Don't let them gouge your eyes out. That's seriously effed.

Actually, yeah...well said.

I didn't (really) intend to come off like an a-hole with my comment...though I think I did.

I'm trying hard to love Kansas right now. But it's damn near impossible.

Yes, I know. It is easier to love Kansas when one lives in Iowa, which is more subtly and more powerfully evil. Pioneer, IBP, hog shit. The seat of agricorp power. It is Iowa that makes Kansas (and everyhere else) wicked, exports wickedness and GMOs throughout the plains. There is an efficiency of wickedness here that Kansas could never match.

Go to the Land Institute's prairie festival. You'll feel better. Or look at Terri Evan's photos, go to Cottonwood Falls, see the buffalo roam.

A final note: anyone who finds themselves in Cottonwood Falls (it could happen) has an opportunity to eat one of the best steaks, um, like ANYWHERE..at The Grand Central Hotel.

As a Kansan, I speak with authority on this issue.

As a fourth generation Kansan now removed, I second the steak recommendation.

Also, try Chicken at Brookville.
