Weekend Update

Once again, I'd like to thank an angel in Iowa.

*

Eugene Celebration was this weekend. This yearly event "celebrates" Eugene, but mostly just confounds and irritates local pedestrians who have go the long way around all the cordoned-off sections of downtown.

*

Witnessed a greater-than-normal amount of bar activity this weekend. Ate FREE chicken wings at Max's. Discussed road/alley beers with Aaron of Little's fame. Ran into friends of exes more often that I should have. Ran into former coffee girls who are mutual friends of exes. Met people from Missouri. Ate collard greens and mashed potatoes. Watched Hannah, post-bar, try to dismantle the metal storage shed in my backyard. Scared a cat (unintentionally) off my front porch.

*

Speculated on Dylan lyrics, and thought about explaning to Julie Denney that "Tupelo Honey" is not a sad song. It is in fact, a slightly inferior remake of "St. Dominic's Preview." Don't get me wrong, it's a good song, but not sad.

*

Saw M&J at the Stein. Made tentative plans for next week.

*

Had many enlightening/hilarious conversations with Joseph Massey, author of Minima Street.

*

On the advice of several of you, have been re-listening to my Ryan Adams discs. What happened after Heartbreaker? Seriously!

*

Saw a Billy Gibbons look-alike harrass a bartender because his Budweiser didn't come in a bottle.

*

Watched Morimoto defeat Patricia Yeo in a Tofu Battle.

*

Was reinstated on a certain Bay Area oncologist's blog.

Didn't Tupelo come before St. Dominic's?

Maybe your definition of sad is too narrow. Sure, there are plenty of songs about love lost, but what's more sad than listening to a song of one's powerful, yet simple, devotion for another... when you know that's something you don't have and maybe never will? Maybe you had to be there. Or maybe I'm overthinking it.

Damn Julie, you're right.

Hm, well, St. Dominic's Preview is a slighty superior version of Tupelo Honey.

I can see how you might find Tupelo sad, point taken. On the other hand, the sadness you talk about resides more in the listener than the song itself, no?

Anyway, thanks for commenting and keeping October real.
