Hey, Physicians!

So, Saturday I took a nasty spill. Head on concrete. I ended up with an egg sized lump on my forehead. The swelling quickly subsided however, and now I have a slighty raised bump covered in a mottling of green, purple, and yellow bruising.

Today (Wednesday) I noticed a small, long, reddish bruise underneath my right bottom eyelid. A few hours later, my upper eyelid and the skin covering the top of my eyesocket was black.

Question: am I dying?

oh please go to the hospital. Or a clinic. Please?

From my years of watching television medical dramas, I would say you've got blood draining from your raised swelling into your eyesocket, and/or it just took a few days for your black eye to develop. Or something completely else. Have you felt dizzy or nauseous? Then it's a concussion. In any case, you would be wise to take Lyco's advice, I think, since I have no idea what I'm talking about.

I agree with larissa and miranda: if you are otherwise feeling fine (and that is the crucial question--that you have no fever, mental status changes, headache, stiff neck etc etc) then this is just the old blood from your forehead bruise following gravity down to the skin of your eye. It often looks really bad, but isn't. Use ice for the first 24 - 36 hours, then heat, to help it absorb. It can take several weeks for it to go away.

Now, Be careful! Were you drinking?

Peter, Larissa, Lyco, Miranda,

Thank you!

Peter, since you ARE a doctor I will defer to your expertise here. I do feel fine otherwise and have no other symptoms. I think I'll just wait it out.

And don't forget about prevention... maybe it would be a good idea to wear a cute pink bike helmet next time you go for a walk.
