Fun Friday Survey

Andy Mister of Houseboat Days who also paints things (gouache on paper) and writes things (Liner Notes) has made the ridiculous claim that Pavement's Slanted and Enchanted is the best album of the 90s. Rubbish! Steve Malkmus lives in Portland. I hate that fucker. Kristin Hersh also lives in Portland, and she's GREAT. However, I do not think she is responsible for the best album of the 90s.

So I put out the call: what do YOU think is the best album of the 90s? Answer in comment box, s'il vous plait.

NO PAVEMENT! That shit is wack, yo!

I don't know if it's my FAVORITE, but Outkast's _ATLiens_ is way up there, but so is _Aquemeni_.

I also want to put Bob Mould's _Black Sheets of Rain_ on the list, but that came out in '89.

Jordan's right. If not Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain, maybe Bee Thousand. I'm so predictable.

What is wrong with me that I cannot stand Pavement?

Tony, god only knows what is wrong with you...

I would also say that Loveless is a contender.

Bossanova

Teenager of the Year

Trace (Son Volt)

March 16-20 1992 (Uncle Tupelo)

Well, shit, now the albums are just pouring out of my head. PJ Harvey's a good call -- I'd put Rid of Me on my top 20 of the 90s. I'd also definitely put Copper Blue -- I had all the Sugar tapes, but haven't picked them up in cd form. Though I'd love to cue up "That's a Good Idea" right now.

Automatic for the People is definitely my favorite REM album.

Other albums that are good defense testimony for the 90s:

I See a Darkness, BPB

Viva Last Blues, Palace

In on the Kill Taker, Fugazi

Gish, SP

Last Splash, Breeders

either Bubble & Scrape or Bakesale, Sebadoh

the first two Pond albums, which I don't have anymore but have been hankering for lately, especially the Practice of Joy Before Death

and I really loved the first two Everclear albums when they came out, though I've since disowned them

how could i forget the breeders?

POD is the one to own, however. But shit, I think POD came out in 89.

I agree w/Palace stuff, Uncle Tupelo, If You're Feeling Sinister, Propeller and Alien Lanes, In the Airplane...

I'd add:
Slint, Spiderland
The Sea and Cake, Nassau
Built to Spill, Perfect From Now On and There's Nothing Wrong w/Love
Yo La Tengo, I Can Hear The Heart... and Painful
Liz Phair, Exile in Guyville
Elliott Smith, Either/Or and S/T
Stereolab, Transient Random Noise Bursts and Emperor Tomato Ketchup
Dead C, Harsh 70's Reality
BPB, I See a Darkness
Silver Jews, American Water
Dinosaur Jr., Green Mind
Godspeed You Black Emperor, Slow Riot...
Labradford, Mi Media Naranja and E Luxo So
Dr. Dre, The Chronic
Wu-Tang, Enter 36 Chambers
Nas, Illmatic

I would put Tori Amos, Smashing Pumpkins and Dismemberment Plan on my WORST albums of the 90's list!

but Tori Amos, Dismemberment Plan and Smashing Pumpkins would make my list of WORST albums of the 90's.

For me it's Slint, "Spiderland." But Nas "Illmatic" comes in a close second.
