A speculation

I think one can train oneself to get better at hearbreak--not at breaking hearts (though I'm sure one can get better at this too) but at handling having one's heart broken.

If it happens frequently enough, it becomes easier to handle. Or so I think. But then it could be the chemicals. Today in our staff meeting, our resident psychologist mentioned that romantic breakups are usually harder on men than women. I'd never heard that before. I'd just always assumed that I was a sensitive nancy-boy. Apparently there are more of us than I had previously thought. Broken Hearted Men, we are Legion!

I have this sudden desire to immerse myself in Brazilian music. Andy, where do I start?

Hey Tony, as far as Brazilian music, you already know Os Mutantes, but you should also check out Gal Costa's first S/T album from 1969, any of Gilberto Gil's S/T albums. Caetano Veloso's 1968 S/T album and 1971 S/T (which I mentioned on HBD), and Milton Nascimento (esp. Clud de Esquina). There are also a lot of good psych bands from Chile like Congreso...

Check out "Heartbreaking Man" by My Morning Jacket if you want to wallow a little today.

I'd also recommend Laurindo Almeida, particularly his album with Raphael Mendez, the name of which escapes. Be wary, there is some schmaltzy Laurindo out there.
